Uji is a small town south of Kyoto. It is home to a quite famous temple, as it is depicted on the 10-yen coins: the Byōdō-in. One of the phoenixes adorning the roof of the structure is also visible on the 10,000-yen bills.
Matcha is a local specialty, and the shops in the area sell everything ‘matcha-flavored’, which I quite enjoy. We first visit the Ujikami Shrine, then climb Mount Daikichiyama. There’s an observation deck at the top that allows for sunbathing.
We take another path to descend and visit the Kōshō-ji Temple. It’s nicely arranged, and there’s almost no one.
We cross the Uji river, which flows from lake Biwa, and finally see the Byōdō-in. The body of water surrounding it offers beautiful views. And a small museum nearby tells a bit more about the history of the building.
Before returning to Kyoto: a stop at a café for some tea and pastry, matcha-flavored of course!
